Some claim that sustainable development requires the wealthy to lower their level of living in order to share more with the poor; others disagree. Development that aims to achieve long-term economic progress while also ensuring future generations' ability to do so by not exceeding nature's regenerative capacity. To put it another way, it is attempting to protect the environment.
