Have you heard of alternate fuels? Yes, alternate fuels also known as now conventional or advanced fuels are any substance or materials that can be used as fuels. It's not the conventional fuels like fossil fuels (petroleum, coal, natural gas) ; or nuclear materials such as uranium and thorium, as well as artificial radioisotope fuels that are made in nuclear reactors. Some of the well-known alternative fuels include bio-diesel, bio-alcohol (methanol, ethanol, butane), refuse-derived fuel, chemically stored electricity (batteries and fuel cells), hydrogen, non-fossil methane, non-fossil natural gas, vegetable oil, propane and other biomass sources. The advantages are: can save limited resources, are cost-efficient, more effective and longer lasting, emissions are fewer and cleaner etc. Have a look at the insightful presentation.
