Veterinary dentistry's core diagnostic modality is dental radiology. Dental radiographs help detect hidden painful pathology, estimate the severity of dental conditions, evaluate treatment options, provide intraoperative guidance, and track the success of previous treatments. Unfortunately, most professional veterinary training programmes offer little or no exposure to veterinary dentistry in general, or dental radiology in particular. Although there is a technical learning curve, mastering the techniques required to create diagnostic films is not difficult. The use of dental x-rays on a regular basis will increase the amount of pathology detected, resulting in healthier patients and happier clients who notice a difference in their pet's mood. The equipment and materials required to create diagnostic intraoral dental films are all discussed here.
