Protozoology

Presentations | English

Branch of biology that deals with study of protozoa. They are eukaryotic organisms, single celled, motile and heterotrophic. Division is based on means of locomotion. They are amoeboids, flagellates, ciliates and sporozoa. Amoeboids move by using temporary protoplasmic outgrowths (psuedopods) include entamoeba histolytica. Flagellates use flagella for locomotion which they usually possess in different stages of life. Examples are Trypanosoma, Leishmania and Trichomonas. Ciliated protozoa uses cilia for moving from one place to another. Cilia is short structures when compared to flagella, hence tend to be present in large numbers. Paramecium uses cilia for movement. Sporozoa is a large phylum which is parasitic. They have no special structure for locomotion. Reproduction can be sexual or asexual, usually asexual through binary fission. They thrive in fresh, brackish and salt water as well as in soils and mosses. Parasitic protozoa use a variety of feeding strategies. Looking for more details on protozoology?
