Tamils have sturdy attachment to the Tamil language, that is commonly commemorated in literature as Tamilannai, "the Tamil mother". it's traditionally been, and to giant extent still is, central to the Tamil identity. it's a Dravidian language, with very little relevance the Indo-European languages of northern Bharat. The language has been way less influenced by Indo-Aryan than the opposite Dravidian languages, and preserves several options of Proto-Dravidian, although modern spoken Tamil in state freely uses loanwords from Indo-Aryan and English. Tamil literature is of goodish antiquity, and underpins the choice to recognise Tamil as a classical language by the govt. of Bharat. Classical Tamil literature, that ranges from lyric poetry to works on literary study and moral philosophy, is remarkably completely different from up to date and later literature in different Indian languages, and represents the oldest body of profane literature in South Asia.
