Computer programs use data types to organise different types of data in a program. Data can also be constant or variable within programs and functions. Data is classified into types, such as a set of whole numbers (also known as integers) or a set of printing characters. Data type is an attribute associated with a piece of data that tells a computer system how to interpret its value. Understanding data types ensures that data is collected in the preferred format and the value of each property is as expected. Different types of data are represented in different ways inside a computer and need varying amounts of memory to store them. They also have different operations that can be performed upon them.
