Like several parts of the body, the eye is also susceptible to infections or diseases. Eye diseases often do not show early symptoms and sometimes even the pain does not exist because not many see any change in their vision until the disease has reached its final stage. Therefore, the best defence is to have regular eye checkups. Glaucoma refers to a group of eye conditions leading to damage to optic nerves as a result of increased pressure in the eyes. Clogs occur in the drainage system of the eye, hence blocking the draining of the intraocular fluid. With the accumulation of this fluid, pressure builds in the eye. High pressure causes damage to the sensitive optic nerves. A damage to the optic nerve causing loss of vision due to many reasons. If untreated, this will cause gradual vision loss. Commonly observed symptoms include: blurred vision, glare, eye pain, headache, and narrowed vision. Treatment aims at reducing the intraocular pressure and preventing further damage to the optic nerves. Intraocular pressure can be reduced by increasing the drainage of aqueous humor or reducing its production through medications.
