The advent of evidence-based medicine has brought new standards and requirements, producing significant change in medical practice. Knowledge is no longer obtained solely through clinical experience which is important but limited. Instead, it is now acquired through the scientific method, which relies on statistics as one of its essential elements. Thus, understanding biostatistics is essential to adequately conduct, assess, and interpret scientific work. Biostatistics is the application of mathematical tools used in statistics to the field of biology and medicine. It is a growing field with applications in many areas of biology including epidemiology, medical sciences, health sciences, educational research and environmental sciences. The discipline of biostatistics provides tools and techniques for collecting data and then summarizing, analyzing, and interpreting it. If the sample one takes are representative of the population of interest, they will provide good estimates regarding the population. Consequently, in biostatistics one analyses samples in order to make inferences about the population.
