The Sahithya Akademi Award is given for the outstanding contributions of literary merit, which is sponsored by the Sahithya Akademi of the Government of India. The books can be published in any of the recognised Indian languages like Hindi, Malayalam and the other twenty two languages listed in the scheduled list of the Constitution of India. The award comprises of a plaque, which was designed by the Indian film maker Satyajit Ray, and a reward of Indian rupees one lakh. The first Sahithya Akademi Award was received by R K Narayan for his English novel The Guide in the year 1960. Bhasha Samman is another award sponsored by the Sahithya Akademi.
