The basic meaning of the word "Yateem" (orphan) is the one who somehow or other is left alone and helpless in society. "Yateem" shall mean the children whose father or both parents have died and the child has not reached the age of puberty. The provision of sustenance, education and upbringing of such children is the responsibility of an Islamic State. Islam is the only religion that has extensively talked about orphans in the glorious Quran. The word ‘Yateem’ has been mentioned more than 20 times in the glorious Quran, highlighting the significance of the most marginalised segment of society. The Holy Prophet was also an orphan as he lost his father before his birth, then lost mother and grandfather at a very early age. He himself experienced the sufferings faced by an orphan, and then there came a time when he brought a great comfort to orphans in the form of Islam, providing them their own rights like others. The Blessed Rasool has stated: Whomsoever passes his hand over the head of an orphan to please Allah Almighty gets a virtue in return for every hair that his hand passes over. Moreover, whosoever does good to an orphan boy or girl, I and he will be like this in Paradise (he said this after having joined his two fingers).
"യതീം" (അനാഥൻ) എന്ന വാക്കിന്റെ അടിസ്ഥാന അർത്ഥം സമൂഹത്തിൽ എങ്ങനെയെങ്കിലും ഒറ്റപ്പെട്ട് നിസ്സഹായനായി അവശേഷിക്കുന്നവൻ എന്നാണ്. "യതീം" എന്നാൽ പിതാവോ മാതാപിതാക്കളോ മരണമടഞ്ഞതും കുട്ടിക്ക് പ്രായപൂർത്തിയാകാത്തതുമായ കുട്ടികളെ അർത്ഥമാക്കിയാണ്. അത്തരം കുട്ടികളുടെ ഉപജീവനവും വിദ്യാഭ്യാസവും വളർത്തലും ഒരു ഇസ്ലാമിക സംസ്ഥാനത്തിൻ്റെ ഉത്തരവാദിത്തമാണ്. അനാഥരെക്കുറിച്ച് വിപുലമായി പറഞ്ഞിട്ടുള്ള ഒരേയൊരു മതം ഇസ്ലാം മാത്രമാണ്. സമൂഹത്തിലെ ഏറ്റവും പാർശ്വവൽക്കരിക്കപ്പെട്ട വിഭാഗത്തിന്റെ പ്രാധാന്യം എടുത്തുകാണിച്ചുകൊണ്ട് മഹത്തായ ഖുർആനിൽ 20-ലധികം പ്രാവശ്യം ‘യതീം’ എന്ന വാക്ക് പരാമർശിക്കപ്പെട്ടിട്ടുണ്ട്. പിറവിക്കുമുമ്പ് പിതാവും പിന്നീട് അമ്മയും മുത്തച്ഛനും നഷ്ടപ്പെട്ടതിനാൽ തിരുനബിയും അനാഥനായിരുന്നു. ഒരു അനാഥൻ നേരിടുന്ന കഷ്ടപ്പാടുകൾ അദ്ദേഹം തന്നെ അനുഭവിച്ചറിഞ്ഞു, പിന്നീട് അനാഥർക്ക് ഇസ്‌ലാമിന്റെ രൂപത്തിൽ വലിയ ആശ്വാസം നൽകി, മറ്റുള്ളവരെപ്പോലെ അവരുടെ സ്വന്തം അവകാശങ്ങൾ നൽകി. പരിശുദ്ധ റസൂൽ പ്രസ്താവിച്ചു: സർവ്വശക്തനായ അല്ലാഹുവിനെ പ്രീതിപ്പെടുത്താൻ അനാഥയുടെ തലയ്ക്ക് മുകളിലൂടെ കൈ വയ്ക്കുന്നവന് അവന്റെ കൈ കടന്നുപോകുന്ന ഓരോ രോമത്തിനും പകരമായി ഒരു പുണ്യമുണ്ട്. അതിലുപരി, അനാഥനായ ആൺകുട്ടിക്കോ പെൺകുട്ടിക്കോ ആരെങ്കിലും നന്മ ചെയ്താൽ, ഞാനും അവനും സ്വർഗത്തിൽ ഇതുപോലെയായിരിക്കും (അദ്ദേഹം തന്റെ രണ്ട് വിരലുകൾ ചേർത്തതിന് ശേഷം ഇത് പറഞ്ഞു).
