Writing abilities are essential for effective communication. When compared to face-to-face or telephone discussions, good writing abilities allow you to express your message to a far broader audience with clarity and ease. At work, you could be asked to write a report, plan, or strategy; as a volunteer, you might be asked to write a grant application or a news release; or you might want to share your thoughts via a blog. Of course, if you desire a new job, you'll need a well-written CV or résumé with no spelling or grammatical errors. We see more and more examples of bad writing abilities in print and on the web these days, when anybody can be their own publisher. Poor writing abilities lead to unfavorable first impressions, and many readers will respond negatively right away if they see a spelling or grammatical error. A spelling error on a business web page, for example, may cause potential consumers to mistrust the website's and organization's legitimacy.
