Women are powerful, but it is surprising to see the need for women empowerment being echoed all over the world. Why is this so! The reason is that, women are powerful but the way the society treats them determines the need for empowerment of women. It is shocking to realise that men and women are not treated equally even in 21st century. Women form an important social category. Social empowerment is meaningless if half of the population of country remains in the grip of selective sex abortion. Social status and roles of women are defined not only in terms of the gender dimension but also in terms of the norms, values, beliefs, traditions and customs of the society. The worth of a civilisation can be judged from the position that it gives to women. Of the several factors that justify the greatness of India's ancient culture, one of the greatest is the honoured place ascribed to women. Women's empowerment can be defined as promoting women's sense of self-worth, their ability to determine their own choices and their right to influence social change for themselves and others. Women empowerment is thus the need of the century.
