Our societies have advanced tendencies to label some people as "winners" and others as "losers," which is logical. Aside from the categorisation's obvious ugliness, the underlying problem with it is the suggestion that life is a single, unitary race, at the end of which all the competitors could be neatly ranked from highest to lowest. There is no such thing as a winner or loser in the traditional sense. There is only one person who has succeeded in some areas while failing in others. To go even further, someone whose talent for winning in one type of race entails that they will almost certainly fail in others – and vice versa. We never completely fail at life. When we make mistakes in the world and feel dejected and isolated, the universe is simply providing us with an exceptional opportunity to begin the training that will enable us to one day become star athletes in less well-known but equally important races – races centered on maintaining a sense of humour, showing gratitude, forgiving, appreciating, letting go – and making do.
