What is water in the atmosphere? Water is present in variable amounts in the atmosphere, from 0 % to 4 %. In the atmosphere, water exists as a gas (water vapour from evaporation), as a liquid (droplets of rain and liquid water that coats solid particles), and as a solid (snow and ice). Its structure depends on its state. Water is constantly cycling through the atmosphere. Water evaporates from the Earth's surface and rises on warm updrafts into the atmosphere. Water vapour is also the most important greenhouse gas in the atmosphere. Heat radiated from earth's surface is absorbed by water vapour molecules in the lower atmosphere. The atmosphere is the superhighway in the sky that moves water everywhere over the Earth. Water at the Earth’s surface evaporates into water vapour which rises up into the sky to become part of a cloud which will drfit with the winds, eventually releasing water back to Earth, as precipitation.
