Water is an indispensable resource for life on earth. Approximately 70.8 % surface of earth is covered with water in the form of oceans. The major water resources are lake, pond, canal, and river. The other available water resources include groundwater and deep subsurface waters and glaciers and permanent snowfields. Water conservation is the practice of using water efficiently to reduce unnecessary water usage. It includes all the policies, strategies and activities to sustainably manage the natural resources of fresh water. It also protects the hydrosphere and help in meeting the current and future human demand. The widely adopted techniques for water conservation and water harvesting are bunding, terracing, contour farming, broad bed furrow system, deep ploughing, micro basins and so on. Reserving rainwater can help recharge local aquifers, reduce urban flooding and most notably, ensure water availability in water-scarce zones.
