Valliyappan Ulaganathan Chidambaram Pillai, popularly known as, V.O.C., or as Kappalottiya Tamizhan (The Tamil Helmsman), was an Indian freedom fighter and leader of the Indian National Congress. He is the founder of the Swadeshi Steam Navigation Company (SSNC) in 1906, started to compete against the monopoly of the British India Steam Navigation Company (BISNC). He launched the first indigenous Indian shipping service between Tuticorin and Colombo with this company, competing against British ships. Tuticorin Port Trust, one of India's thirteen major ports, is named after him. He was a member of the Indian National Congress, and later was charged with sedition by the British government and sentenced to life imprisonment, and his barrister license was revoked. வள்ளியப்பன் உலகநாதன் சிதம்பரம் பிள்ளை, வ.உ.சி., கப்பலோட்டிய தமிழன் அல்லது தமிழ் ஹெல்ம்ஸ்மேன் என்று அழைக்கப்படுகிறார். இவர் இந்திய சுதந்திரப் போராட்ட வீரர் மற்றும் இந்திய தேசிய காங்கிரஸின் தலைவர் ஆவார். அவர் 1906 இல் சுதேசி நீராவி வழிசெலுத்தல் நிறுவனத்தின் (SSNC) நிறுவனர் ஆவார், பிரிட்டிஷ் இந்தியா நீராவி ஊடுருவல் நிறுவனத்தின் (BISNC) ஏகபோகத்திற்கு எதிராக போட்டியிடத் தொடங்கினார். பிரிட்டிஷ் கப்பல்களுக்கு எதிராகப் போட்டியிடும் நோக்கத்துடன் தூத்துக்குடிக்கும் கொழும்புக்கும் இடையே முதல் உள்நாட்டு இந்திய கப்பல் சேவையை அவர் தொடங்கினார். இந்தியாவின் பதின்மூன்று முக்கிய துறைமுகங்களில் ஒன்றான தூத்துக்குடி துறைமுகத்திற்கு அவரது பெயரிடப்பட்டது. அவர் இந்திய தேசிய காங்கிரசில் உறுப்பினராக இருந்தார், பின்னர் பிரிட்டிஷ் அரசால் தேசத்துரோக குற்றம் சாட்டப்பட்டு ஆயுள் தண்டனை விதிக்கப்பட்டார், மேலும் அவரது பாரிஸ்டர் உரிமம் ரத்து செய்யப்பட்டது. இந்த விளக்கக்காட்சியில் V.O.C பற்றித் தெரிந்து கொள்வோம்.
