Village fairs are a fascinating part of Indian culture. Across the country, numerous villages boast of their unique and special fairs, held in honour of the local deities. The Telugu states too have a plethora of interesting fairs called ‘Oori Jaataralu’. Ganganamma Jaatara, Poleramma Jaatara, Mahalakshmamma Jaatara and Mahankalamma Jaatara are but only some of the prominent village fairs from the two states. While some of these are held every year, some are held every alternate year or sometimes even once in 12 years. They are held to appease the village goddess in the belief that she would look after the welfare of the villagers, keep their animals safe and grant them good crops. The rituals that are followed in these fairs changes from village to village. A bit more on some of the more prominent oori jaataralu and how they are held is given in this fascinating presentation.
