In the Hebrew Bible, the Song of Songs is a poem that very imaginatively illustrates the concerns of a young man and a young woman. This work was glimpsed as an illustrative representation of the relationship between God and His people. It differs from other biblical texts in subject and exhibition style. Although King Solomon is mentioned in the title and subject of the book, modern thinkers believe that Solomon composed half a millennium after his exile in Babylon. Regardless of its significance as a book of the Bible, the Song of Solomon can be deemed a love song of tremendous beauty but since it is an official passage in the books of the two great theologies, the assumption that it must have connotation beyond what seems in common reading has always followed the experience of that book. Its objective is to touch and delight the heart of the reader. It is not exact to say that its importance is religious or spiritual. At the same time, only those who confuse love and sex with atheism can find atheism or agnosticism in it.
പാട്ടുകളുടെ പാട്ട് എന്നറിയപ്പെടുന്ന ഉത്തമഗീതം ഹെബ്രായ ബൈബിളില്‍ തനക്കിലെ കെത്തുവിം എന്ന അന്തിമ വിഭാഗത്തില്‍ നിന്നും എടുത്തിട്ടുള്ള ഗ്രന്ഥമാണ്. രണ്ട് പ്രണയികളുടെ പ്രേമ പരവശത ഭാവനയുടെ ഊഷ്മളതയോടു കൂടി ചിത്രീകരിക്കുന്ന കവിതയാണ് ഉത്തമഗീതം. ഈ കൃതിയെ യഹൂദ-ക്രൈസ്തവ വ്യാഖ്യാനത്തില്‍ ദൈവവും ജനവും ആയുള്ള പ്രതീകാത്മകമായി കാണുന്നു. അവതരണശൈലി യുടെ പ്രത്യേകത കൊണ്ടും വിഷയത്തിന്റെ പ്രാധാന്യം കൊണ്ടും വേറിട്ടുനില്‍ക്കുന്ന ബൈബിളിലെ ഒരു ഗ്രന്ഥമാണ് ഉത്തമഗീതം.
