Are our social media platforms useful? Individuals use social media to express themselves, discuss their interests, connect with friends, and grow their careers. Different social media platforms are used for specific purposes. Within this online community, you can also acquire information and insights from others who have already been where you are now or have completed similar research. The four main uses of social media form the acronym SLIM- Sharing: you can share information and ideas in a variety of ways, the information you share can be either private or public, many outlets allow you to publish your ideas. Learning: the immediacy of the information flow allows you to get the gist of the latest news almost as it happens, also reveal public sentiment about the big issues of the day or, on a less urgent level, opinions about a new restaurant or movie. Interacting: Social media break the traditional barriers of time and distance between people and it' most powerful element is their interactive nature. Marketing: businesses use social media to promote themselves and their products. Nonprofit organizations raise funds and promote charity events. Individuals market themselves to prospective employers. And can also use social media to promote ideas and events that are important to you.
