Kolar Gold Fields is a small mining town in Karnataka, South India. Folklore traces this place's history and its associated gold to as far back as the Treta Yuga - the era of Lord Rama. Several mining companies have tried their hands at extracting tonnes of Gold from Kolar. It was the John Taylor and Sons Company that operated the mines for almost a century in the 1800s and reaped great profits. The region of Kolar was popularly known as the ‘Mini England’ due to its British and Anglo-Indian influence. It was also one of India’s earliest industrialized towns and Asia's first Hydro power supplied town. This PPT talks about the days of its origin, its historical and mythological connections, its gradual decline, and reasons leading to the final closure in 2001 of the once prosperous Kolar Gold Mining Company. Also indicated in this resource is the present situation at Kolar, the tourist attractions nearby and the most expensive Kannada-made Pan-Indian film, "KGF '' that is woven in the backdrop of these mines. It is in fact this film that has brought back memories to many of the past gold rush in the Kolar region. KGF: Chapter 1 released in 2018 brought the forgotten glittering tale of the town to life again. Now that KGF Chapter 2 has a release date and the world is waiting to witness if Rocky Bhai would take control of KGF, in spite of several big heads fighting for the throne, we discuss in this PPT if reviving the Kolar mines is feasible and would it be as successful a venture as the movie KGF Chapter 2 is expected to be. Once the world’s second largest gold reserve, it moved from a successful private operation into the hands of the state and then was subjected to an unexpected closure; it remains an unfinished story as some dream of tapping into the gold reserves that are supposedly still around. Do read to know about the fascinating story of KGF, the mine and movie!
