Plant tissue or organ culture was developed because the conventional breeding techniques could not fulfill the required demand of crops. It makes use of parts of a plant to generate multiple copies of the plant in a very short duration. The technique exploits the property of totipotency of plant cell which means that any cell from any part of the plant can be used to generate a whole new plant. The different types of plant tissue culture include: seed culture, embryo culture, callus culture, organ culture, protoplast culture etc. Tissue culture is used for developing genetically identical plants from one single parent. This can produce disease-free plants. It has also been used for the production of commercially important plants like tomato, banana, apple etc. The presentation will provide you promising details on this topic.
