Transport Hazard and Control

Presentations | English

Some hazard controls include elimination and substitution (which is the most preferred method of controlling risk is to eliminate the hazard altogether), engineering controls, administrative controls, personal protective equipment (PPE) and so on. Dangerous goods may include substances that are explosive, toxic, radioactive, corrosive or flammable. In the event of a road or rail accident, spillage of these substances could cause hazards such as fire, damage to the environment and chemical burns. Elimination is the process of removing the hazard from the workplace. It is the most effective way to control a risk because the hazard is no longer present. It is the preferred way to control a hazard and should be used whenever possible. Engineering controls are favoured over administrative and PPE for controlling existing worker exposures in the workplace because they are designed to remove the hazard at the source, before it comes in contact with the worker.
