Transient current is the current before reaching the steady state. In steady state current and voltage becomes constant, but in transient state they change and tense to constant steady value. When the voltage or current spike maybe created by a build-up or decay of a magnetic field which may induce energy into the associated circuit. In the power system, transient over voltage (TOV) or current generally build-up in short duration due to switching of heavy motors or transformers. Lightening strokes to the wire in power system or to the ground induce transient voltage or current in the power system. When a circuit is turned on or off, voltage and current take time to stabilise to their final values after going through a transition period. When it happens to these parameters during this transition period is called transients. Special precautions and necessary to tide over safely during this period.
