Traditionally, for centuries, occupations in India were hereditary in nature. Every caste had its own occupation. Even to this day, caste-based occupation can be seen in the country, especially in rural areas. While changing times and social conditions have given opportunities for people of all castes to take up any occupation, people retain some of the cultural aspects associated with their caste-based occupations. This three-part series brings to you a brief explanation of the caste-based occupations prevalent in ancient times in the Telugu lands. You can also catch a glimpse of the various cultural aspects of these occupations as well as certain demographic details in here. The second part of the series includes occupations like agriculture, carpentry, shoemaking, bricklaying, shepherding, blacksmithing and handloom weaving.
