The Thrissur Pooram is an annual event held on the pooram asterism in the Malayalam month of Medam at the sprawling Thekkinkadu Maidan in Thrissur city. The festival is a gathering of Pooram and jumbo fans from all over the world, who can be seen dancing to the beat of percussion instruments. It is a significant festival for the people of Thrissur and the surrounding areas. People travel from all over Kerala to attend this festival in order to pray to Lord Shiva. On this day, a massive procession with music and prayer is planned. The procession also includes elephants decked out in gold ornaments. The two-century-old Thrissur Pooram was established in 1798 by a royal edict issued by Raja Rama Varma, popularly known as Shakthan Thampuran, a powerful ruler of the erstwhile princely state of Cochin. The edict designated two local temples — Paramekkavu and Thiruvambady — as the primary sponsors of the competitive festivities. Small poorams from nearby temples join the festivities, which conclude with a fireworks display, in addition to the main poorams by the two devaswoms.
