Currently, the search to identify treatments and vaccines for novel coronavirus disease ( COVID-19) are ongoing. Desperation within the community, has driven increased interest in exploring alternative choices of medicinal plant-based therapeutics. As a country rich in flora and fauna, a huge investigative venture has being initiated, towards the use of herbal and complementary medicine, some of which are based on local traditional knowledge. This research is full of possibilities yet challenging. Most interestingly, many plants have shown immune enhancing properties and relieve other ailments too. Identifying, isolating, and producing reference standards required for the standardisation of medicinal plants is challenging, compared to synthetic chemical entities, which are more straight forward. Along with other drugs currently tested against COVID-19, plant-based drugs should be included for speedy development of COVID-19 treatment.
