The Canterbury Tales

Presentations | English

The Canterbury Tales is a collection of 24 stories that runs to over 17,000 lines written in Middle English by Geoffrey Chaucer between 1387 and 1400. He portrays 29 pilgrims, excluding himself, who meet at Tabard Inn to go on a pilgrimage to the shrine of Thomas Beckett at Canterbury. The pilgrims are carefully chosen, representatives of the different sections of the then contemporary society. In order to relieve the monotony of the journey, each pilgrim was to tell two tales on the journey to Canterbury and two on the way back. The prize for this contest is a free meal at the Tabard Inn at Southwark on their return. Chaucer could complete only twenty four tales. The tales give a faithful picture of medieval life in England. The Canterbury Tales reveals how Chaucer enlarged the range and scope of English poetry. He struck the modern note of realism in his poetry.
