Thaipuyam is a festival devoted to Lord Murugan, who is said to wield the invincible spear or Vel. Goddess Parvati gave Lord Murugan the Vel on this day, and he used it to defeat the army of demons. This is commemorated in Thaipuyam. It is observed as a thanksgiving celebration to Lord Murugan, the universal granter of wishes. Thaipusam commemorates the triumph of good over evil, when Goddess Parvati bestowed the Vel upon Lord Murugan in order for him to defeat the demon army. Thaipuyam, which is marked by a big, colourful annual procession, sees Hindu devotees in Singapore seek blessings, fulfil vows, and express gratitude. Lord Subramaniam (also known as Lord Murugan), the slayer of evil, is honoured throughout the festival.
