Formal education for women was quite rare in the ancient days. And women writers were even rarer. The Telugu language, however, boasts of having great women writers from as early as the 14th century. This multi-part series offers a brief biographical sketch of the various ancient women writers and some of the prominent ones from the current times. The first part of this series covers writers beginning with the 14th century Ganga Devi till Saraswati Gora garu of the previous century. In this part are covered Kotikalapudi Sitadevi garu, Vasireddy Sitadevi garu, Muppala Ranganayakamma, Bhargavi Prabhanjan, K Varalakshmi garu, Pothuri Vijayalakshmi garu, Jayaprabha garu, Juppaka Subhadra garu, P Lalitha Kumari garu and Balabhadrapatruni Ramani garu.
