Formal education for women was quite rare in the ancient days. And women writers were even rarer. The Telugu language, however, boasts of having great women writers from as early as the 14th century. This multi-part series offers a brief biographical sketch of the various ancient women writers and some of the prominent ones from the current times. The first part of this series covers writers such as the 14th century Ganga Devi, 15th century Tallapaka Thimakka (wife of renowned composer Tallapaka Annamayya), 16th century Molla (known for her Ramayanam), Thirumalamba of the Vijayanagara Empire, Leelavathi, 19th century Tarigonda Venkamamba, Bandaru Achamamba, Ponaka Kanakamma (Gandhiji’s disciple), Abburi Chayadevi, Illandula Saraswati Devi, Kondapalli Koteswaramma, Thella Lakshmi Kanthamma, Thuraga Janaki Rani garu and Saraswati Gora garu.
