Sathakamu is an anthology of 100 poems. Sometimes, hundred is just an honorific number. Some of these anthologies contain a bit more than 100 poems. Sathakamulu are famous among Telugu people. Some of these like the Sumathi Sathakam and Vemana Sathakam contain four-lined crisp poems that teach great wisdom and morals. While these remain the most famous anthologies and are often taught from a very young age in schools, there are several others, many of which have remained obscure. This presentation brings to interesting information on the origins of the Sathakamulu, the rules adhered to in writing these, the characteristics of these anthologies, and some poems from the 'Pancha Sathaka Aanimuthyaalu', the five most prominent Sathakamulu.
