Songs and music have been an inseparable component of Telugu movies even from their early days. This is true for movies in almost all other Indian languages. In the early days of Indian cinema, most actors had a theatre background and were accomplished singers themselves. Hence, they sang for their own roles. However, from the 50s, actors with little or no music training were also given chances in movies and that was when playback singing began. This presentation takes you through the world of playback singing in Telugu movies, beginning with early actors like Chittooru Nagayya, R Balasaraswati, Tanguturi Suryakumari, to Ghantasala, Suseela, SP Balasubramanyam, all the way to the current singers in the industry.
