Every year 8 - 10 lakh people commit suicide, Suicide is the 10th overseeing reason for death worldwide. A man is four periods more likely to commit suicide than a woman. It is estimated that between 1 million and 2 million suicide attempts fail each year. Failed suicide attempts are more likely to occur in young men and women. Suicide is considered a crime in many countries. Suicide was previously considered a crime under Section 309 of the Indian Penal Code but was repealed by the National Mental Health Act passed by the Indian Parliament in 2017 to eliminate existing discrimination against the mentally ill and provide them with the medical care they need. In most Western countries, suicide or attempted suicide was once considered punishable, but this attitude has changed. It is considered a criminal offence in most Islamic countries."
