Sri Lanka may be tiny, yet it has a world of breathtaking beauty and natural wonders. Marco Polo referred to Sri Lanka as one of the world's most beautiful islands. It has a long and illustrious history and, despite its tiny size, enough of natural and aesthetic beauty to appreciate. Adam's Peak is a large, cone-shaped peak in central Sri Lanka that is home to a varied ecological habitat. The 2,243m (7,359ft) ascent is a popular Buddhist pilgrimage path, as it is believed that an impression of Buddha's own footprint may be seen near the peak. For a peaceful city holiday, head to the well-preserved colonial city of Galle on Sri Lanka's southwest coast. You can now visit this town, which is full of lovely Dutch-era homes and beach vistas, as part of Culture Trip's epic 12-day Sri Lanka journey. One of Sri Lanka's must-see sites is the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Climb up to the old remains to enjoy spectacular views of the jungle hills below, which are surrounded by gardens, ponds, and exquisite paintings.
