Sree Narayana Guru

Narayanaguru was born in 1856 in Chenpazhanthi, Thiruvananthapuram, on the eve of the month of Chingam, as the son of Madanasan and Kuttiamma. His parents gave him the name Nanu. In 1860, Nanu started learning to read and write from Chenpazhanthi Pillai. After attending school till the age of 10, he joined Raman Pillaiyasan at Kummanilli in Kayamkulam. He studied Sanskrit, Vedanta, Mahabharata and Ramayana. In 1881, Nanu established a one-teacher school. With that, Nanu came to be known as Asan. Married in 1882 at the insistence of her parents, But he did not stop at family life and left for monastic life. In 1884, he started performing penance in a cave called Pillathadam in Maruthamala he meditated here for three years. He is first seen by a shepherd boy who came to graze his cattle. Later many people started coming here. He appeared to all irrespective of caste or religion. Swami had a rock in his hand which was sunk in the Sankarankuzhi in Neyyar. The stone was placed on a pedestal prepared earlier. That is the historic Aruvipuram Dedication. Gurudeva preached the same religion all over Kerala and dedicated many temples. The great poet Kumaranasan, Dr. Palpu, Satyavrata Swamy, T. K. Madhavan, C Krishnan, Murkothu Kumaran, C Keshavan, R Shankar and others were prominent collaborators in his work. Sree Narayana guru formed the Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana Yogam (SNDP) and established a Math at Sivagiri and made it their headquarters. In 1904, a night school for Harijans was started here. He has written about sixty books in Malayalam and Tamil. He established many schools and temples. In 1924, the first interfaith conference convened at the Advaita Ashram in Aluva was held in India. In 1922, Rabindranath Tagore visited Sivagiri. It was also during this period that the message was conveyed to the world that religion is enough for man to be good. In 1920, a lamp was installed in the Karamukku temple to replace the idol. In the same year, he gave the message that one nation, one religion, one God, one man. In 1925, the foundation stone was laid for Sivagiri Brahma Vidyalaya. Gandhiji visited Guru in Kerala in the same year and later adopted Harijan upliftment as a way of life. After that Gandhiji started a newspaper called Harijan. The Guru, who started the Sivagiri Free Industrial and Agricultural Gurukul, India's first vocational education center, is considered the father of vocational education in India. In the same year, the Guru wrote a will and the last rites were performed at Kalavukodam. It was in 1928 that the Dharmasangham was registered and permission was granted for the Sivagiri pilgrimage. Sree Narayana Guru was cremated on the evening of September 20, 1928.
