The phrase ‘Source of law’ has several connotations. It may be the authority which issues rules of conduct which are recognized by courts as binding. In this context, ‘Source of law’ means the maker of law. It may mean the social condition which inspires the making of law for the governance of the conditions. Broadly there are two types of sources of Hindu law. They are Traditional/ Ancient sources and modern sources. The traditional sources of Hindu law refer to those ancient Hindu legal systems that governed the conduct of Hindus in that particular time. They are Shruti (Vedas), Smrities, digest and commentaries, customs and usages. . It is the guiding principle in the present system also along with some modifications. Modern sources of Hindu law refer to those sources which are comparatively new source that emerged over time and evolved in the present form. They are equity justice and good conscience, legislation and precedent. The presentation gives in-depth knowledge on the sources of Hindu law.
