Social cognition is the way in which people process, remember, and use information in social contexts to explain and predict their own behavior and that of others. Social cognition concerns the various psychological processes that enable individuals to take advantage of being part of a social group. Of major importance to social cognition are the various social signals that enable us to learn about the world. We can learn a great deal simply by observing others. There are two importantly different types of unconscious social cognition: (i) unconsciousness of the influences on judgment and behavior and (ii) unconsciousness of the mental states (i.e., attitudes and feelings) that give rise to such judgements and behaviours. There are also many factors that can affect the cognition of an individual in a social context or within any particular family. And some of those different factors include the genetics, the past experiences, and the level of stress, the nutrition, other peers, and many other factors.
