According to many experts, the Seven Wonders of the World are the finest architectural and sculptural achievements of the ancient Mediterranean and Middle East. The best-known are those of Antipater of Sidon, a 2nd-century BCE writer, and a later but unknown observer of the 2nd century BCE who claimed to be the mathematician Philon of Byzantium. The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World is the oldest known list of this type, documenting the most remarkable man-made creations of classical antiquity; it was based on popular guidebooks among Hellenic sightseers and thus only includes works located around the Mediterranean rim and in the ancient Near East. The number seven was selected by the Greeks because they felt it signified perfection and plenty, as well as because it mirrored the number of planets known in ancient times (five), plus the Sun and Moon. Many comparable lists have been created for various parts of the world, the entire planet, or that include natural marvels rather than man-made constructions.
