Self Perception & Confidence

Presentations | English

Self-perceptions of one’s physical appearance entail mental images of how one looks. These perceptions are by no means accurate representations. An individual may be of normal weight, but the self-perception may be that one is skinny or fat. One’s facial self-perception may be skewed by the emphasis of certain features over others. A man with modest hair loss may perceive his extent of balding as extensive. A person with a slight facial scar may perceive the scar to be severe. These subjective perceptions, not an objective vantage point, form the basis of the individual’s body image attitudes. Given this distorted perception, such individuals understandably have negative evaluations of their looks. Confidence is not a motivational perspective by itself. It is a judgment about capabilities for accomplishment of some goal , which must be considered within a broader conceptualization of motivation that provides the goal context.
