“Look outside and you will see yourself. Look inside and you will find yourself.” Self-awareness is the first step to personality development. It is also the first building block of emotional intelligence. Soft skills are character traits and interpersonal skills that characterise a person’s relationship with other people. Self-awareness is the foundation of all the soft skills and the perfect place to begin. By developing self-awareness, we will be able to effectively guide our own behaviours and take control of our life. Self-awareness is knowing and accepting the various aspects of yourself, including your strengths and weaknesses, thoughts, beliefs, motivations, and emotions. Without being aware of and understanding our own emotions, it will be difficult for us to move into the other emotional competencies. Self-awareness is important because when we have a better understanding of ourselves, we are able to experience ourselves as unique and separate individuals. We are then empowered to make changes and to build on our areas of strength as well as identify areas where we would like to make improvements.
