Every year on June 20, the world commemorates World Refugee Day to recognise and honour the courage and resilience of refugees around the world. This day is observed by the United Nations to recognize refugees who have been forced to flee their homes. The day's goal is to foster understanding and empathy for refugees who are establishing new lives in foreign countries. The day is observed around the world to draw attention to the plight of refugees and to mobilise political will and resources to assist the people in rebuilding their lives as soon as possible. In December 2000, the United Nations General Assembly declared June 20 to be World Refugee Day.
