20 percent of the radiation we are now experiencing is mainly due to human intervention. Some causes are mining, handling and processing of radioactive material, storage of radioactive waste, using radioactive reactions to generate nuclear energy and radiation in medicine. Radioactive materials emit radiation and the harm they can cause depends on the radioactive elements and their half time function. Some are present in the environment and some are used in nuclear power plants. Exposure to high amount of radiation can generate chronic diseases, cancer or even death.
