Does Unix use C language? Unix distinguishes itself from its predecessors as the first portable operating system: almost the entire operating system is written in the C programming language, which allows Unix to operate on numerous platforms. C and UNIX provide the ideal programming environment for the experienced programmer. Much of Unix kernel is written in C. Learning to program in C gives a set of low level programming tools that is unmatched by any other programming language. The C language was actually created to move the UNIX kernel code from assembly to a higher level language, which would do the same tasks with fewer lines of code. The GNU operating system itself was started using C and Lisp programming languages, so many of its components are written in C. In order to run a C program in Linux, you need to have a C compiler present on your system.
