It was the year 1832. The region we now know as the Krishna District was suffering one of the worst droughts in recorded history. While the fields in this region were all dry and barren because there were no rains, the Krishna River itself was full of water that was flowing into the sea. It was then that a plan to create a barrage was drawn up, so that the water of this perennial river could be used to irrigate the lands around. The barrage, now a tall and proud structure between the hills of Vijayawada, has turned this region into one of the most fertile and prosperous places in the country.
