Punica granatum, or pomegranate, is a shrub that bears a red fruit. The pomegranate fruit is classified as a berry and measures 5–12 cm (2–5 inches) in diameter. It's red, round, and has a flower-shaped stem, similar to a red apple. The pomegranate's skin is thick and inedible, but inside are hundreds of edible seeds. Each seed is encased in an aril, which is a red, juicy, and sweet seed covering. The edible parts of the fruit are the seeds and arils, which can be eaten raw or processed into pomegranate juice, but the peel is discarded.
