Plasma Membrane

Presentations | English

"Also known as cell membrane, which is found in all cells act as a separation between cell interior and outer environment. It contains a lipid bilayer that is semi permeable. It facilitates the movement of molecules entering and exiting the cell. Various functions are performed by cellular membrane. It provides protection and a fixed environment inside the cell. The proteins present on the surface interacts with other cells, sometimes those proteins can be glycoprotein or lipid proteins. This aligns a structure for cell membrane. The most widely accepted model for structure of plasma membrane is the fluid mosaic model, according to which the principle components are lipids (phospholipids and cholesterol), proteins and carbohydrate groups attached to some proteins and lipids. In RBCs, 30 percent of composition of the membrane is lipids. The permeability of the membrane is based on diffusion of molecules through it. Looking for more information about the topic?
