Pharmacognosy

Presentations | English

What is Pharmacognosy? The field of pharmacognosy (from the Greek pharmacon for medicine and gnosis for knowledge) is the study of the definition, description and phytochemistry of natural drugs (typically medicinal plants or preparations derived from them).Pharmacognosy is the study of medicines or crude drugs produced from natural sources such as plants, microbes and animals. It includes analysis of their biological, chemical, biochemical and physical properties. The field is used by pharmaceutical companies to screen, characterise and produce new drugs for the treatment of human disease. Often, naturally occurring drugs cannot be mass-produced, so they must be studied in order to develop synthetic biosimilar. It is these secondary metabolites and pigments that can have therapeutic actions in humans and which can be refined to produce drugs—examples are inulin from the roots of dahlias, quinine from the cinchona, THC and CBD from the flowers of cannabis, morphine and codeine from the poppy and digoxin from the foxglove.
