OS acts as an interface between the user and the system, which is a software capable in performing all the basic functions like file management, memory management, process management, handling input and output, controlling peripheral devices like printers and disk drives. Other important activities are prevention of unauthorised access to program and data, control in system performance, keep a track of time and resources used, error detection, coordination between user and other softwares. Every computer needs an OS to run other programs and provides an environment within which these programs can do useful work. Types include batch OS, which performs a sequence of jobs without manual intervention, time sharing OS, which allows many users to share the computer resources, distributed OS, manages group of different computers to act as a single entity, network OS, can be used for security purposes, and real time OS, applications to fix the deadlines. Examples are Windows, Linux, MacOS, Android and iOS. The topic is described in detail in the powerpoint presentation.
