"Are oil spills pollution? What is oil pollution and why is it a problem? Why is the Oil Pollution Act important? What are the major effects of oil pollution? Oil destroys the insulating ability of fur-bearing mammals, such as sea otters, and the water repellency of a bird's feathers, thus exposing these creatures to the harsh elements. Without the ability to repel water and insulate from the cold water, birds and mammals will die from hypothermia. An oil spill is the release of a liquid petroleum hydrocarbon into the environment, especially the marine ecosystem, due to human activity, and is a form of pollution. How do oil spills affect humans and the environment? Oil spills have major environmental and economic effects. Oil spills can also affect human health. People who clean up the spill are more at risk. Problems could include skin and eye irritation, neurologic and breathing problems, and stress. Do you know that oil pollution can have a devastating effect on the water environment; it spreads over the surface in a thin layer that stops oxygen getting to the plants and animals that live in the water? Don’t you want to learn how to stop oil pollution? Let’s learn more about the topic, shall we?"
