A number is a mathematical value that is used to count and measure items as well as conduct arithmetic computations. Natural numbers, whole numbers, rational and irrational numbers, and so on are all types of numbers. The term numbers are used to refer to the digits or numerals. They are the unique symbols or characters. When they are used for things like telephone numbers, code numbers they are used for identification rather than mathematical calculations. Their function in mathematics is obviously to count, measure and calculate. In mathematics the numbers are classified into different types such as odd numbers, natural numbers, prime and composite numbers, rational numbers, irrational numbers, imaginary numbers etc.
